Cause![]() Robespierrre being beheaded by the
guillotine of July 28th 1794.
1. National Assembly abolished the feudal system. 2. National Assembly applied revolutionary ideas to government. 3. The Assembly seized church lands and made all clergy state paid officials. 4.Food shortages and Government Debt still remain. 5. Heightening pressure from the Prussian forces attacking France starts upheaval in Paris due to the lacking French defense. 6. Jacobins including the most prominent member, Jean-Paul Marat, called for swift reform of the government. 7. France suffers a series of defeats in the war against Great Britain, Holland, Spain, Prussia and Austria. 8. Maximilien Robespierre rises to power promising to build a "republic of virtue" (pg 660). 9. The Reign of Terror begins as Robespierre becomes the virtual dictator as the leader of the Committee of Public Safety, who's job was to protect the people and the Revolution from their enemies. 10. National Convention in July 1794 demand for the arrest and execution of Robespierre, out of fear of public and personal safety. Effect
1. This action made all the estates from the Old Regime equal by law.
2. NA officials wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which gave all MEN rights, women were not included. 3. The church loses political power and the assembly uses funds to pay off some of National Debt. This also caused the majority of Catholic peasants to be upset and now appose the NA's reforms. 4. These problems cause the Legislative Assembly to split into 3 parties: Radicals, Moderates, and Conservatives. 5. This causes the royal family to be imprisoned and many nobles, priests, and people loyal to the crown to be killed by mobs. 6. The National Convention had reduced King Louis XVI's status in society to that of a peasant, and the Jacobins led the vote in the trial to which Louis was sentenced to death. 7. This leads to the calling of a draft by the National Convention of more than 300,000 french citizens of both men and women ranging from age 18-40. 8. Changes the calendar to 12 months with no Sundays. Robespierre considered religion dangerous so he elimanated the Holy day. 9. Robespierre has many people killed, and justifies his actions saying that it made French citizens remain true to Revolutionary ideals. (page 660) 10. Reign of Terror ends with his death on July 28th of 1794. |
